Selective Breeding

Selective breeding is the process of choosing animals to mate and produce desired offspring. Animals are selectivly bred by farmers for meat, fur or looks. Cows are selectivly bred for their meat but also for if they can survive in harsh weather. The Highland cow has a thick, fury coat to keep it warm in the winter up north. However the Holstein cow which we are used to seeing does not have a thick coat because it does not need one. Cows are also selectivly bred for their milk.

Plants can also be selectivly bred. Plants are selectivly bred for their colour, juiceness, shape or taste. Vegtables like carrots and potatoes are selectivly bred so that they have a nice and similar shape.
