Respiration

Respiration happens in every cell of every living organism. It is the process of releasing energy from glucose and is vital to us staying alive. The energy released through respiration is used for muscle contraction, building proteins and keeping warm. Respiration that uses oxygen is called Aerobic Respiration. The word equation for this is:

Glucose + Oxygen > Carbon Dioxide + Water

(This is the reverse of photosynthesis)

However, humans can also experience anaerobic respiration. This is respiration without oxygen and can cause a stich while exercising. The word equation for ananaerobi respiration in humans is:

Glucose > Lactic Acid

However in micro-organisms such as yeast, anaerobic respiration producesnoxygen an ethonal. This is how alcohol is created

Glucose > Oxygen + Ethanol
