Plant Nutrition
Plants produce food via photosynthesis. Photosynthesis is a chemical reaction that takes place in every green plant. Through this, plants make glucose (a carbohydrate). Photosynthesis happens in all the green parts of a plant, but mainly the leaves. The word equation for photosynthesis is:
Sunlight
Carbon Dioxide + Water > Oxygen + Glucose
Chlorophyll
Leaves are very good at carrying out photosynthesis because they: have a big surface area to absorb sun light, the chloroplasts found in leaves are at the top where they can get the most sunlight, the underside of the leaf is covered in tiny holes called stomata, which allow oxygen and carbon dioxide to diffuse and leaves contain lots of veins to carry water and glucose around the plant.
