Forces can make objects turn on a pivot. The moment is the turning effect of the force. To calculate a moment, you do:
force (n) x distance from pivot (m) = moment (Nm)
Balancing moments means that the clockwise moment equals the anti-clockwise moment.

The Moment on the left equals (12 x 20) 240Nm so the force on the right must equal (8 x 30) 240Nm. The moments are balanced
